Removing orange peel - will clear cover it?

I sprayed a base coat of paint this morning and it has some orange peel. Should I sand it smooth *before* I clear coat? Or, should I clear coat over it and smooth out the clear by wet sanding?

you cant sand the base coat and go straight to clear

if its terrible sand it flat and re base coat it for a normal finish

clear coat will cover minor /normal peel ...then wet sand and buff the clear coat when done

Yes. A flatter base will create a flatter end product. Many high end/custom paint jobs are block sanded in between base coats.

Thanks for the replies...however, I had to go ahead and spray before the 18 hour recoat window expired. Interestingly though, my results actually don't agree the majority here.

After applying several coats of clear and then a 'flow coat' of extra thin clear, the orange peel vanished. I haven't even buffed it yet and it looks near flawless.

I'm amazed that when it comes to painting, there is so much disagreement.

Also, a bit of info on some sanding. I have a test panel I used that had the orange peeled paint. On half of the panel, I sanded the paint smooth. The other half, I left the orange peel on. Then, I cleared the whole thing. When finished, I couldn't tell which half I sanded. That leads me to conclude that sanding the base coat before applying clear is a waste of time.

Hmmm, I guess you were able to accomplish something that car manufacturers as well as every painter I've spoken to can't. I'd love to see some good pictures.
