Rain Spots

So I just got my hood painted (aftermarket hood)

And today I saw some spotting... etching or whatever on the hood. It was in the rain this week, and I suppose that's what did it.

Strange though, I drove it to work in the rain and drove it home... it's not like it sat out for weeks but I guess the paint was just too soft.

Anyway... is this something that can be removed with a PC or am I just screwed?

I'm getting a PC 7424 from Autogeek on Monday. I got the deal with the pinnacle polishes... the "Advanced Swirl Remover" and the "Finishing Polish"

Thanks for any help.

Was there protection on the hood? If there was protection, then water spots should come off with a simple wash. Otherwise, you can try some vinegar/water or isopropyl alchohol/water. I would try that before going to the polish (unless you need to polish out swirls/marrings anyway).

Water spotting isn't really that strange. We had some rain yesterday, and there were water spots on our car (protected with Collinite 476S). I'm sure that the spots will come out with a regular wash, although I'm not gonna wash it because I just spent 2.5 hours detailing it yesterday :)

The paint is only about four weeks old so no I hadn't put anything on it yet.

Yes I just washed it and no they wouldn't come out.

i had a thread about the same type of problem...my TL protected w/ zaino had terrible water spotting after a rinse. vinegar took them right off. give that a try and report back. :)

Vinegar didn't work :(

If I get low on the paint I can actually see a slight indentation of the spot in the clear coat. I have to get REALLY low and it's very tough to see unless you're at the right angle.

My wife thinks I'm crazy because she had a hard time seeing it... but I assume you guys understand.

So I'm assuming I'm screwed... I don't know... maybe it was acid rain or something. I've never seen anything like this.

You guys?

that sucks...

there are a few products specific for water spot removal (duragloss makes one)...i haven't used it though. if it is actually etching in the paint, then you need to polish it out.

others here are more experienced with etching removal. from what i've read it can vary from easily removed via a PC...to needing a rotary...to wetsanding needed. basically depends on softness of paint, deepness of etching, etc.

Yeah I get my PC today so I'm hoping I can get some good results with that.

Should I just polish the whole section or should I try to hand polish out the water spots?

I'm new to the whole PC thing so I wasn't sure.

Thanks for the help.

^^^^^^^:spit: - lets not try to take the easiest way out or anything...jump right to the most aggressive way....LOL

I would assume since its not sitting on there all the time that the etching is relatively light and should come out with some OC/83 on a light cutting pad...then follow up with a pure polish on a polishing pad, then leave off with something like megs 80 for a little protection without sealing in the gases...its recommended leaving the paint unprotected for about two months I think...try clay too! That might help...or the vinegar, or CLR...

I am going to start carrying around some CLR for bad cars....and glass

Yeah I'm not confident enough to wetsand it... I JUST got the PC and I'm a little nervous using that hehe :)

I have the Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover... is that strong enough or would I need to go stronger?

If your etching is anything like mine then a PC won't work. I used Megs M83 and it did absolutely nothing. I'm assuming nothing short of a rotary will get these out.

My car sits outside 24-7 and is exposed to all the elements. Including morning dew or rain that gets burned in the paint when the sun comes out. I've got it on my hood, roof and trunk lid.

I'm not sure if mine are as bad or worse... it's tough to tell from a photo.

I'm planning to use Optimum Compound and hopefully that will work.
