I'm new to this, but I'm wondering if the sound my BRAND NEW porter cable 7424XP is making.. is.. well.. normal?

Here is a slow speed clip:

Please let me know what you think.. maybe I'm just worrying about nothing. Just sounds like its making a circular 'grinding' type sound.. not sure if thats normal.

Thanks.

that is without the backing plate on there.. however.. sounds similar with the backing plate on.. i guess i should have taken the sound clip with the backing plate on.. maybe i'll make a new one. So they all have that circular grinding type sound?

It does sound like the ones in that video a bit.. maybe a bit louder.. but then again thats because the backing plate was off perhaps?

Found this video as well:

At the end of that video.. you can hear the 'ratting' type sound.. i guess thats what i was worried about.

Mine seems to sound pretty similar to that.. hmm. Guess i could just be worrying about nothing.

Sounds like mine - especially at the very beginning before you have the speed kicked up. The little plastic housing on mine also rattles something fierce.

I didn't watch or listen to any of the links you supplied but this issue has come up for years on forums and usually the person is holding the polisher in the air when they're running the tool and if that's the case the yes it's going to make some noise.

Try affixing a foam pad onto the backing plate, putting some product on the pad and then place the face of the pad against some paint and then turn it on.

That's how you use the tool and that's where the sound it makes matters, not letting it run in the open air.

(Just a guess after reading posts like this for years)

:nervous2:

thanks for all the replies! Well.. glad to know its not working improperly then.. just makes some really weird sounds! haha. Thanks again!
