Painters Tape Residue on Trim

I detailed my car a couple of weeks ago and taped off all trim prior to using the PC. I think I accidentally picked up the cheap painters tape off the shelf (half used roll so there was not a wrapper) and now some of my trim has sticky residue on it. What can I use to safely remove the residue?

I had the same problem. Try some GooGone. That should take care of it.

Now a bigger question is how to prevent it to start with. I have NOT tried this, but I'm thinking that wiping protectant on the trim before apply tape may help. I.e., the tape may not leave the residue.

I you try this, please report back on how well this works.

Dan.

I'd think that the tape wouldn't even stick... I'll give it a try though on my next detail!

The tape will not stick to the surface due to the slickness of the protectant.

TW85 HHI,

Was the trim you used the tape cared for in the past? As trim in need of care will sometime cause the tape to leave a residue. Was the tape blue painter's tape or the off-white masking tape, as this stuff can leave a residue. I really like the 3M/Scotch brand blue painter tape. I used another brand which would not stick anything including it's self.

Yes, the trim was cared for. The tape was blue painters tape (3M I think). May have just been a bad roll?

The tape I used was the blue painters tape also.

I agree with the other poster that the tape may not stick after protectant is applied. If so, this presents a major problem. Since I always use a protectant, then the protectant will be present the next time I detail. So I'll have the issue at some point.

Note that the "goo" problem was on a new car that never had protectant on it.

Dan.

I had this happen with some cheap blue tape from Lowes. I used 3M Adhesive Remover (or was it Wurth Cleans-Solv?) to get the residue off. I've used Goo-Gone/Dissolve-It before too.

For future reference the 3M tape will have the Scotch or 3M branding printed inside the cardboard roll, pretty easy to spot once you know what you're looking for. Hopefully that will help you spot the GOOD tape next time ;)

Well, it was 3M tape I used. Maybe it was just a bad roll.

I know Goo-Gone will remove the residue but could it harm the rubber? The bottle specifically says to avoid using it on rubber...

Funny, I never had the 3M do that, maybe it *was* a bad roll.

I honestly don't know about the Goo-Gone and rubber. Nothing that dissolves adhesives is gonna be too swell for rubber anyhow...

Bookemdanno- If I recall correctly, the new "green" tape from 3M is supposed to stick better to dresses trim, and come off cleanly too. Haven't tried it myself, though.

Well, tried 1Z Cockpit Premium and it seems to have removed the residue. I'll inspect more closely in sunlight. Also tried Sonus Carnauba Spritz and it also seemed to remove the residue, but I felt more comfortable with the 1Z. :nixweiss

Hopefully the trim does not look faded and smeared tomorrow. :scared
