Pad & backing plate wear

I've been using the Meguires pads and DA backing plate and I already went through one backing plate cause it stoped holding the pads, after about 10-15 uses with multiple pads (even when the pads were new) so I went out and bought another backing plate. Today on the new backing plate (about 3 uses) the plate actually got so hot that it melted in the middle and warped and when hot it wont hold the pad.

are these just **** quality parts or am I doing something wrong

I use my PC at speed 6 with the heavy cut pad and some pressure down.

Wow thats rough. I might suggest switching to a more heavily built machine (Cyclo), but in the meantime try Lake Country's backing plate. Their pads are of world-class quality, so I would believe that their BP's are too. That, or you're putting too much weight on it. I find that hard to believe though, as I'm about 220, I always run my PC at 6, and I put all my weight on it on heavy compounding. Needless to say, I switched to a Cyclo for a reason :).

yeah, i didnt think I was pushing the limits of the pads.

its probably just the meguires crap quality, im really not impressed by them lately (but thats a whole other thread)

so Porter Cable is no longer the machine of choice. Cyclo is the better now?

Oh yeah, its well worth the 300 bucks or so. Its not that much faster, it wont take out an amazing amount of stuff that the PC won't, its just that its THAT pleasant to use, in terms of minimal vibration. I buffed and compounded a black GMC 2500, and I was actually able to hold my soda at the end of the job :). It is pretty heavy, but it'll do wonders to your forearms. Its got nothin on a rotary in terms of speed, but for someone with ADD like myself, a rotary can be a very dangerous tool, whereas the Cyclo is pretty much idiot-proof.

Thanks for brining this up. I was about to go spend some dough on Meg's backing plates and pads (the combo) but after reading this thread, I'll go with the LC.

Muchos gracias!
