Newbie Purchase

I recently bought a new car, and I'm thinking of purchasing the following to detail it (based on what I've read in the forums):

Porter Cable 7424 Polisher

D.A Adapter 5/8" X 11

2-3/4 Hook & Loop Backing Plate

Foamed Wool 3.5 inch Buffing & Polishing Pad

2 Pack CCS Spot Buffs Yellow 4 Inch Pads

2 Pack CCS Spot Buff White 4 Inch Pads

Lake Country Orange Flat 4 Light Cutting Pad (6 Pack)

Meguiars Mirror Glaze #80 Professional Speed Glaze

Meguiars Mirror Glaze #95 Speed-Cut Compound

CCS 6.5 inch Gray Finishing Pad

I already have:

Optimum No-Rinse Car Wash

Optimum Opti-Seal

Meg's clay bar

buckets, mf towels

Am I missing anything? I have a few light scratches on my fender; what would be the procedure to fix them? I'm guessing: wash, dry, clay bar, use #95 on the scratches, then #80 on the whole car, then Opti-Seal? Does that sound right? This will be my first detail.

Just a couple of thoughts on your products. I'd scratch off the 4" yellow pads and substitute more white pads. The 4" orange and the PFW will more than suffice for stubborn defects. If you plan on using the 3.5" PFW pads I'd get at least a couple of extras.

While the D.A Adapter and 2-3/4 Hook & Loop Backing Plate will work for both the 3.5" PFW (Purple Foamed Wool) and the 4" foam CCS pads you'll have to use that adapter that I'm not real fond of (they can and have come loose). Use that for the PFW if/when you have to use it for spot corrections but loctite the adapter to the backing plate. For the 4" foam pads just buy a 3.5" standard BP so you won't have to worry about the adapter coming loose:

3.5" Dual Action Flexible Backing Plate- porter cable 7424 or 7336 hook and loop backing plate 3.5 inch.

For the larger 6/6.5" pads you'll want a 5" BP:

Dual-Action Hook & Loop Flexible Backing Plate 5"

I agree with Ness, but I would get the 5.5" grey pad instead of the 6.5". You are probably getting this for sealing, waxing, or jeweling the paint. The 6.5" pad will soak up too much product and its bulky to use in tight areas.

Am I missing anything for polish? Does my procedure sound correct? I don't want to ruin my new paint :(

Here's the updated list of things to buy:

Porter Cable 7424 Polisher

D.A Adapter 5/8" X 11

(2) Foamed Wool 3.5 inch Buffing & Polishing Pads

(2) 2 Pack CCS Spot Buff White 4 Inch Pads

Lake Country Orange Flat 4 Light Cutting Pad

Meguiars Mirror Glaze #80 Professional Speed Glaze

Meguiars Mirror Glaze #95 Speed-Cut Compound

3.5" Dual Action Flexible Backing Plate

Dual-Action Hook & Loop Flexible Backing Plate 5"

2-3/4 Hook & Loop Backing Plate

Gray Finishing CCS Smart Padsâ„¢ DA 5.5 inch Foam Pad

Does that sound right?

Personally, I'd substitute #95 for #105. As stated, you'll want to pick up a few extra PFW pads, as they do get caked up rather quickly.

Definitely go with the 3.5" flexible backing plate over the 2 3/4". While I have never had an adapter come loose (I crank down on the backing plate and it stays on there just fine), I generally only recommend the 2 3/4" for rotary or drill use only, as the vibrations of DA polishers tend to vibrate the glue loose and cause it to come apart. The 3.5" is much higher quality and will serve you much better overall.

Your process sounds pretty good. Keep in mind you'll need the 5" backing plate for the 6.5" gray pad. If you get a 5.5" gray pad, which is also cheaper, you can get away with the same 3.5" backing plate as mentioned. ;)
