Hello everyone, I've been searching all over the net to try to get some help. I saw this site and it looks like the perfect place.

I have a 4 month old 350Z. I had some scratches throughout the vehicle so I decided to get rid of them. The suggestion I recieved was 3M Scratch remover part # 03901. The rest of the vehicle came out great except for the bumpers. On the spots that I used the product on has lost its luster. I applied the product and it didn't come out as it should have. I had to use another product to remove what 3M left behind. Now my bumpers has ugly spots on it where the product(s) were applied. They are not noticeable but to anyone else except me. I'd really hate to take this to a body shop so I need your expertise. Thank you very much. :bow

You won't have to take it to the body shop or anything, I highly doubt.

Someone will tune in here pretty quick, I am not familiar with much of the 3M product line.

Don't lose sleep over it!

Well, that's the thing about it. I'm quite anal about my car like probably the majority of people here. Especially when I did more damage than good to my poor car, I am loosing sleep over it. :(

Sounds like haze. I didnt think 3m scratch remover would be that abrasive? What product did you use to "remove what 3m left behind"?

I used the 3M Scratch Remover part # 03901. When this product didn't come off completely I tried using Meguirs Scratch X. This product removed the 3M but the spot where the products were applied now became dull looking. I almost cried when I saw the applicator when I used the Scratch X, some of the paint I guess came with it? It wasn't a whole lot but againts the white applicator I could see a tint of blue.

I bet you could even it out with a very gentle polish....I have had great luck with Wizards Shine Master.....(thats the only one that comes to mind right now...anybody??)

you applicator was tinted blue? I could swear 350z's were clearcoated. If its haze try some menzerna final polish it should remove the haze and bring back the luster.

ScratchX will certainly leave the paint dull, from what I remember. Go over with a polish, followed by a cleaner, followed by sealant/wax and I bet you will be back in business.

:)

Any compoud or scratch remover formula is going to dull the surface. They have to, as they are designed to remove 1,000 to 2500 grit sanding scratches. This is no big deal. To restore full gloss, select a good "Swirl Remover" polish formula. As it is a small area, the work should be easy to do by hand. Be sure to use a good foam applicator and buff with a quality towel.

They are clear coated or I figured they would be, isn't most car now a days has a clear coat finish? If it's also not too much to ask, can you all provide with the website of the products that you are suggesting? All of these product names are foreign to me and I wouldn't know where to start looking. Again, thank you for everyones response.

So far I've gotten two promising products, Meguirs #9 & Menzerna Final Polish. YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME! Just getting these positive responses that I will make this mistake right is making me feel better. THANK YOU.

As you can see it’s a ‘very user friendly’ place, and if it solves just one of your detailing problems it’s worth the price of admission

Both are good and I have them in my cupboard. The #9 has fillers and the Menzerna doesn't .. the part that makes me a little nervous is the comment about the blue on the applicator. By chance did you go through the clear coat. If so there isn't a lot you can do to fix it. Maybe the hint of blue was just some of the 3M residue?

Yes, very much so.:xyxthumbs Thank you.

DavidB also suggested that I use Einszett Paint Polish. I was leaning towards the Menzerna until this was presented to me. I guess I can't really go wrong with either products.

I would be complaining to nissan if their factory clear coat was soft/thin enough to be chewed through using a light compound by hand one time :shocked I know plastic parts have thinner paint, but is it really that thin?
