Need to add a couple more coats of clear

Just a question for any of you paint-knowledgeable people out there. I painted and put a couple of clear coats on a tricycle that I did for my son at Christmas time. It has been sitting in the garage since then and really needs a couple more coats of clear to bury the metallic flakes I used for the flame job (if you run your finger over the flames you can feel the bumpiness of the flakes). Do I need to do any special prep? Or can I just dust/clean it off and put on another couple of coats of clear to bury the flakes?

Thanks,
Neil

Once clear is dry you must sand it to make next coat stick.
With metal flake all I can say is Good Luck you will need it. :wall

Wet sand it so it gets a little rough so the clear will stick just make sure you don't take off the clear you already put on. And you are going to have to do many coats to bury that flake so good luck just be patient. Coat, sand, next coat, sand, and repeat for a while and you should be fine.

Yeah, I painted the flames using a color changing (red to gold) metallic paint from Auto Air Colors. Unfortunately, when I was doing all my research, I somehow missed the part in their directions about using their transparent base to bury the flakes. I didn't have any and already had 2 coats of clear on there. I guess once it cools down and the humidity drops to better painting levels, I will go out and start clearing again (and again, and again, lol!)

The only problem here is that until you get it finished he may be ready for a two wheeler.:D

He's only 2-1/2, so hopefully I have some time before a two wheeler:pray:

Already thinking about the two wheeler though, thinking black chrome paint job with candy :D
Now to find a suitable donor on craigslist....
