Need advice

I need some advice. I always been a clean freak with my car. I wash it all the time and I love to do it. It is always spotless inside and out. But I always been afraid to learn to use a buffer. I worried that I will burn the paint. I have a 2007 nissan frontier in a storm grey color and need advice on which stuff to buy. Which buffer is the best to buy and what pads and products should I use in what steps. There is so much information on this site and just want to know a good place to start with using something thats new to me.

Im new too but a UDM would be a good place to start. Some of the other guys probably have more information about pads and everything.

UDM or a Porter Cable is a great way to start learning. You can get a starter kit with a few orange, white, and blue pads on AG. You should be able to correct most problems with those pads. Too bad AG just ended their sale over the weekend. Do reasearch on the boards on product selection to identify the right products. There are numerous tutorials on this website and online on the best way to use it. Always start with the least aggressive combination as possible and go heavier if need be.

Welcome to the learning process!

Get a random orbital buffer. I have a PC, but really wish I had gotten a UDM. It's basically the exact same thing, but with 20% more power. With the PC, you pretty much have to try to burn through the paint to do that, unless you are using 4" pads and a heavy cutting compound. I can't imagine the UDM being any more likely to burn paint. And get some Menzerna polishes. They are pricey, but you will love them.

thanks alot. So I going to get the udm intro kit. What the best and easiest products to learn with. My truck paint is in great condition. I always used good products to wash and dry but never did a full on detail. So should I wash, dry and then clay bar it. what steps do I take after that. The paint really is not the bad. I just dont want to put swirls into it. I always hand wax with otc waxes so I really lost when it comes to this.

As for the "best" products there is no such thing, Menzerna is a good line but not everyone uses it. Try some products and use what you like. You may also want to try the optimum line of polishes and sealents. Also do a search for ONR on the forums and learn about it.

Griots Garage makes some really good orbital wax. Dont worry, it wont damage your paint in any way. Somehow I really doubt they would make stuff like that to hurt your car. As far as products I personally like to use, here is a link.

And more specifically

The first link is just to the site, and the scond is just to the orbital related things.

Good luck! Have fun with it.

As for the best polishes to learn with, I'm not sure. I started out with Poorboys and, believe it or not, had a lot of trouble with it. For some reason I just could not cut through my clear. Then I got Menzerna IP and 106 and had no problem whatsoever. But that's just my experience. And definitely check out the "How To's", like the other pc mentioned.

I live in Monroe so I could stop over on a weekend and show you how I use the udm. Note that I'm not a pro but just nuts about keeping my cars clean.

thanks guys for the input. I def. buying a udm next week. Now I have to wait for some warm weather. jswift200 I might have to take you up on that offer. To bad we live in new england I hate having a dirty truck.

Cool. Just let me know and we'll sort out a date. The winters are a little rough but that's why we have onr - it has become my early morning ritual on the weekends while everyone is still sleeping.
