Hi, John here from the uk.

I own a 2006 model lexus in Astral black, its a cow to keep looking good, no matter what I try I cannot get that wet look. the best I achieved was with 3m imperial hand glaze. as Todd pointed out even buffing with new micrfibre towels will scratch the paint, i find old flanalette sheets work best. Come on you Yanks show us Brits how its done!

cheers toby tyke.

Do all late model Lexus' have 'environmental paint'?

I detailed a Rred IS300 and that paint was super soft! I had to make passes with poli seal on a white pad to get rid of the micromarring that even my best MFs were leaving behind after wiping the OP residue off.

My guess is that maybe you are not breaking down the polish completely and wiping it while there are still some abrasives left....

I owned a 2005 Lexus ES330 and had problems as well.

When I purchased my 2005 Lexus LS430 (53,000 Kilometers), I tried a new system to correct and protect the paint.

I gave the Ultima system a go.

The following process brought out a defect free finish on paint that I am pretty sure had never been maintained.

1) Washed with Ultima Paint Guard Wash drying thoroughly.

2) Clayed with Sonus Clay and Lube - after fooling with the Elastrofoam which did not suit me at all.

3) Repeated step 1

4) Using the Porter Cable buffer I polished with Ultima Paint Prep Plus. I also tried a section by hand just to see the difference. Major! A buffer is a must here. Hand rubbing just couldn't clean up the micro scratches. I used an orange buffing pad.

5) Repeated step 1 (again...) though I think this may have been overkill.

6) Applied three coats of Ultima Paint Guard Plus about a day apart each. Takes about ten minutes. Stuff goes a long way. Follow the directions closely.

I used a Sonus Der Wunder Mitt wash mitt, Blue Perl microfiber towels, and a "fire hose nozzle".

This whole process up and including the first coat of UPGP took me about 6 hours.

All said and done, not a single visable spider web. Also the finish is soft, smooth and durable as could be.

Maintaining...

I tried the detail spray. No luck. Though good for bird bombs.

I simply repeat step 1 and reapply a coat of UPGP if I think it needs it.

I regularly get compliments on my paint and the feel of the paint. Rain beads and flows nicely when driving.

Thanks Kaval, Knucklebucket,

You have just confirmed what Polishedbliss emailed last week. Iam using too hard an abrasive which is not getting broken down by the machine, he suggests either menzerna RD3.02 on its own or else follow up with 3m 50383 perfect it 111 ultrafina. He says this will take time , but if it gives the results. Many thanks for your help, will have to order from the US for the Ultima as I dont think its available in the UK?. Will give your tips a try and let you know, ah well another 8hrs in the garage, wife will be happy!!!

Sorry to steal the tread, but a new MF towel will scratch the paint? I've never heard of anything like this before, I don't understand.

Is your paint metallic? A nice carnuaba will bring out the metallic flakes and make it bold, if thats what you're looking for. A paste wax will offer, more, longer lasting protection, though.

I tested my MF towels on both a portion of my paint and a compact disc. I worked them both over pretty good and never saw any problems at all! I even used a well lighted laboratory magnifying glass. I am guessing you have a screwed up towel or maybe a manufacturing issue in that make or batch.

No doubt carnuba will give great depth and bring out the flake. Problem is it isn't very durable. Also I have found that with carnuba waxes, you get what you pay for (well within reason - never tried the >$1K stuff).

I am a solid sealant freak. Ultima or Zaino.

KnuckleBucket,

You have to see to believe it. Washed car etc, polished with UDM and 3m PerfectIT EFC. Nice result, cleaned with carlac 68 then added carlac pure sealant, very thinly. Got my best MF towel and buffed off, as with carlac there were some spots that needed a bit extra buff. Took it out into the sun and sure enough you could see the back and forth movements i had done!. Its non metallic, Astral black you dont seem to have a true clear coat like you get on most cars. This was main reason I joined up, so you guys could tell me where I was going wrong, will try out all your advice .

Exactly what i plan to do next time, just gets very dissapointing seeing scratches after spending 6hrs in the garage!. Plan to write to Lexus UK and ask thier opnion?

This doesn't give me an exactly warm, fuzzy feeling for a black '06 Lexus LS460 I have coming up this weekend. It has some minor spider webbing. I was planning on going after it with some Menz 106FA, the Flex and maybe a white pad from Erasure??? Probably start out easy with the Flex on speed 4 or 5, which would be a change for me!!! I like to run that thing full bore!!!

See my post early in the thread. I have had great luck with my 460. It has been a pleasure to work with. My biggest "complaint" is that there is ALOT of trim to detail inside the beast.

Love detailing my LS though.

Johnny:

Spent Sunday detailing my Black Opal LS600hL with the Flex. IP followed by 106FF, mostly on 6 on the Flex. Worked great. Followed with AJ, to be topped with Souveran.

The paint does scratch very easily, but looks beautiful now.

Relax. BTW, which color black is yours?

zzzdoc - appreciate the feedback, especially since your using a Flex as well. I'm not sure what color black it is. It's my dad's and I'm supposed to be cleaning up the paint for him. I have a similar combo with IP and 106FA. What color pads did you use for each? IP = orange and 106FF = white? I might have to order a few more white pads for this. Mainly been doing heavier correction with Flex using IP and orange pads. Thanks again!!!

When I first got the car, I used Orange with IP and white with 106FF. Only have LC pads.

Actually, I misspoke above. This week I was able to get out all the scratches/swirls with green and 106FF. Ordering more white pads might not be a bad idea, though.

Mine won't be exactly the same color, as Black Opal is only available on the LS600hL, not the LS460.
