I'm a know it all salesman..

In one of the forums I sponsor, I found this post in regards to detailing and clay:

go easy on the claybar; it makes your car look nice but you're taking off the protective clearcoat. in a couple of years you'll look at your car and notice the color is faded, especially on the top surfaces and leading edges(i learned this the hard way). not a problem if you trade or re-paint every couple of years.meguiars nxt generation fills in swirl marks in one easy step and keep the car in a garage or under a car cover. HTH

I responded with this little post:

Clay doesn't take off ANY clear. It simply removes bonded comatminents from the paint's surface. I don't know where such erroneous information could even have been obtained.

Hell, even using a Porter Cable random orbit polsher with any assortment of polishes won't take off enough clearcoat over the course of several years to get into the basecoat.

And he was nice enough to respond to me:

if anybody has at least an 100 IQ you can use your eyes to see what clay does over time. all i need is another know-it-all salesman trying to get in my back pocket telling me i don't know what i'm talking about. what else do you sell to make ends meet because it's obvious with an attitude like that your not making a decent living?

I rarely challenge folks since I don't feel it'sa good image to project, but this guy is a few fries short of a Happy Meal.

hhaha..the funny thing is you weren't trying to sell him anything...you were just giving him advice. Some people you just have to stay away from.

What forum was that?

lol 100 iq eh.. appenrlty his is lower then that. All clay is, is a resin with abrasive.. It will casue damge if used without lube, however noone is that dumb. What a guy lol. Well i guees hell have dirty dirty paint

Where is this other forum? I say we show him what clay is all about. You try to teach someone but sometimes it's just not worth the time or effort.

He's the know-it-all and a perfect example of the type to simply not waste your time with. Maybe he ought to call up Auto Wax and hear it right from the horse's mouth about what clay does and does not do. Oh, and sure, he'll then start up again with saying they're pulling the wool over his eyes beause not only do they sell the product, they make it.

Misinformation is a terrible thing.

It's a forum I sponsor, so I'm listed as an authorized vendor. Hence the salesman comment. I'm not worried at all as there are plenty of competent detailers there that will be more than happy to point out that I am correct.

I just wanted to share my experience. I don't get into pissing matches online, it's just not worth it.

Well, judging by his grammar, punctuation and lack of capital letters, I wouldn't consider him too particular about "details." :D
And look! He considers you "knowledgeable!"

lol i never put caps on anything because it slows my typing down ( too used to MSN) :p

but back to the original post: i have actually come across a lot of people who think clay is very abrasive. I think some of it is from othe detailing website that say that "Brand X's clay is safe to use every day where as Brand Y's clay can only be safely used twice a year"

i don't clay my car on a schedule, i just clay when the paint is not smooth as glass

sometimes you just have to ignore theses kind of people

I can't belive this guy uses Meguiar's. Meguiar's has some of the best detailing products in the word but I guess when used by an idiot they still can product okay results. Meguiar’s NXT can fill some swirls but for the most part the company sells products to *remove* swirls ie: ScratchX, M09, M82, M80, M83

Shame on you you salesman you.

I belong to a few forums and it is amazing the amount of mis information on car care that gets thrown around. So i try and be helpful and explain things to some people and they just do not get it. They think all you need to do to keep a car looking good is apply a coat of wax every now and then. The MustangForum is really bad about this. Autogeek was a Sponsor there until last week and I have seen where they try and help and it is the same type of attitude. I think those at Autogeek gave up and are no longer sponsors over there.

You know, that's ALMOST as bad as what I heard on TV earlier today. I was watching "Trucks!" on SpikeTV, and they were talking about removing oxidation, swirls, and bird crap from a black Jeep Wrangler. Right away they went to the 2000 grit wet-sanding paper... using Joy dish detergent and water as a lube. No backing pad for the sandpaper, nothing. Then, they proceed to go from wetsanding to a wool pad and heavy cut compound, then a polishing pad with a light compound, and finally the finishing pad and compound (all with a makita).

And the best part? The guy said "There's no need to worry about color-sanding your finish, especially since you won't go through your paint with 2000 grit." -- I still can't figure out what would make him say something that dumb, especially since I've actually seen it happen, and DONE it first hand sanding through the clearcoat with 2000 grit when I was on a body curve.

And the absolute best part? At the end of the episode they talked about how all that work would help to keep the truck looking good.... as they're running the foam brush at the local coin-op down the fender of their fresh polished jeep.

I just don't get some people.

Is this the "NEW TRUCKSTV"?? With the two new yahoo's that host it?? I no longer watch this show since Stacy left. The Muscle Head guy was on FEAR FACTOR fro crying out loud.

I think you should make youself a small video and send it into trucks, convince them to do a show on detailing. I kow i woudl watch it

Scott, there was someone that was on another board that I belong to, that was saying that, washing will eventually remove the clear that's why he only washes and waxes his car twice a year.

I told him if washing was going to remove small amounts of clear I was going to throw away all my polishes and just wash my car everyday for the perfect finish :rofl

Yep, that's the one. Now I just watch it for a good laugh (much the same as the laughs I get from Musclecar aka the "Mr. Clean Show"). I still really like Horsepower and Extreme 4x4 though. :howdy

Honestly, though, I remember an episode Stacey did about detailing once, too, and the advice was rather questionable at best -- made some things seem much more harmless than they truly are. I think they seriously need to bring some of us from sites like DC on there to show what REAL detailing is all about. Most people probably couldn't handle it, though.... I know we all tend to get a bit extreme and can overwhelm "normal" people easily.:lmfao

Even if you were to teach this "Closed mind" Yo-Yo. He'd never admit he was wrong...

The Darwin Awards is still alive and well, he's just at the beginning faze.

I saw that and wanted to punch that guy in the nose. Those new guys are morons and further stupifying the general detailing public.
