How soon can you wax a new car

My friend who just bought a VW, said that you don't need to wax for the first year. I told him you can and it will actually protect your car.
 
No way would I wait a year. I think we had my wife's car for about 8 weeks when I clayed,polished and sealed it

The general thought seems to be that you can wax todays cars the day you take delivery.
The dealer probably sold your friend a "protection" package and is telling him he doesn't need to wax for a year. The dealer is right, he doesn't ever need to wax. The car will look like crap and the paint will be lucky to last 1/2 as long as it could with proper care.
Now, I'm not saying he needs to put 10 or 20 coats of anything, but at least 4 times a year would be a minimum I would ever recommend.

If I gave you that impression, I apologize.
I can't say what you should do, but I would feel quite comfortable waxing a 4 week old vehicle.

Wait 1 month to 2 months at the most. I think from the point of painting to your hands is good enough. I strong disagree that you don't wax your car for a month.
 
You can wax a new car as soon as you get home. Now whether you'd really want to or not is another question. Depending on the dealer's care, you may want to clay and wax a car soon after delivery due to a rail dust and other pollution from transportation, or bad care from sitting on a lot too long. JMHO
 
You can wax a dealer new car the day you bring it home and depending on the car you my want to do just that. You may even want to go as far as requesting that the dealer NOT “prep” the car. Chances are the dealership is detail department is more concerned about quantity not quality. They may actually do more harm than good, or the dealership may not do anything at all. When in doubt give it some TLC as soon as you can. That’s what I would do if it way my new car.

don't wax it if you are buying it straight from the factory line....other that that, if you look at the manufacture date of the car(usually by the drivers side door)...add the time it sat on the dealers lot before you bought it...by that time, I think it is screaming for some protection...my 04 maxima had a total of 64 days since the manufacture date until I bought it......

I hope the vehicle did not go to the new dealership's division "Swirl Mark and Scratch Application Department" or SMSAD.

Sure, wax away. All paints are fully cured.

Those additional "sealants" are just "spiff" money for a dealer. In other words, easy money! You can do much better on your own with the right sealants like Klasse, Zaino EX-P, etc.

Enjoy the new car and the smell of wax!

QUESTION FOR EVERYONE: Look at your new vehicle manufacturing date; Example 1-01-04. Here's my question. How is that date telling you when the paint was put on?! Maybe the paint was applied a year/ 6 mos. prior to that date and simply warehoused until assembly time. Does anyone have first hand knowledge about the actual assembly/manufacturing process at all big 3 dealers?
 
Most cars are built on an assembly line to where the car is painted in the same building as it is assembled. In some cases a car may be painted and then sit but in most cases a car is built the same day or next day after it's painted.
 
Here is the answer.......If you get a new car it is usually 4-6 weeks old and it has been painted at least that long.It usually takes 2-3 weeks to get the car out of the yard and moving. I won't say all cars but most of them.You can get your new car home and wash clay wax the same day you get it.For me I have done this plenty of times.The next week I put on another coat of wax.
