Hi there im new to this fourm and I recently got a job at carmax as a detailer but I do not know how much I will get paid for each car could some body tell me how much I might make Thank You

It all depends on alot of variables. What products you use. How well the car comes out. The experience you have had with past cars. Reputation...........

If you list the products and order of what you do, It could help us out determine a rough estimate

Well im using carmax products and they said they well pay on com. but they did not say how much and that is what im trying to find out

They said each car is broke down in a certain amount of time it should take to complete it. For ex. it takes 4hrs to do x truck and i do it in 1hr i get paid for that 4hrs but i do not know what that 4hrs=

Or conversly they say they'll pay you for 4 hrs and it takes you 6... ~devils' advocate~

Not trying to be rude, but shouldn't you have figured this out before you took the job?

Are you an employee of CarMax or a independent contractor? If you are an employee, I would hope they would have told you what you were going to make, and if you're independent it is up to you to define your rates.

Are you going to be cleaning the cars that people trade in, or are you going to be washing the cars on the lots?

I have a friend who washes the lot cars and gets paid around $0.20 per car. He sprays them down with a pressure washer, then his workers use a chamois and dry them. Of course, he does a lot at one time so it adds up.

If you're going to be cleaning up trade-ins using their products, then you're probably just going to be paid for your labor and not your expertise. If you have to pay for their products they can either deduct the amount from your pay or you'll have to pay them back when you need more.

Let me see if I have this straight--you took a job but you don't know what they are paying you? My advice would be to ask your employer, rather than having us guess. It's a fair question and something you're entitled to know...and besides, you didn't even ask when you applied for/accepted the job?

Sounds like he may be a private contractor, If so you charge what the market will bear.

If you are in demand you can make from $75 per car and up depending on where you are located and what type of detailing do you do (interior / exterior). And yes you would need to hand pick your detail products.

If you are serious and you have never done this before you probably need to watch someone work who does detailing professionally.

If you are a CARMAX employee and you're asking about the tips, You take what you get.

No offense, but if you do in 1 hour what should take 4 hours, the truck is going to look like crap.

Based on cars I have seen butched by CarMax detailers, they are the wrong company to learn detailing from.

Looks like they are setting you guys up "flagging time" like a mechanic or a bodyman? They basically assign a certain number of hours to each job/operation and you try to do it quicker. For example, bodymen/mechanics flag 80-120 hrs per week, but they only worked 50. I'd be really interested in how much time they allow per vehicle and if they pay more or less if it's trashed or a creame puff?

Yes, they work on flat rate. There was another thread about CarMax a couple months ago where the pay structure was discussed. Of course, those guys knew what their rate was.

What "they"* say it will take to "detail" a truck and what it will actually take are two entriely differewnt things. If you get a realtively clean vehicle to start with, you can make some money. If you are dealing with a filthy rotten dirty rolling dumpster, you won't be compensated for all of your work.

*I am willing to bet that the "they" have never detailed a car in their lifetime!
