Hey guys. Sorry for the speed question on this forum but I was pretty sure I'd get more responses here. I seem to be in the middle of some friendly discussions/debate with a few of my friends. So here's the question. How would you all rate these cars in terms of fastest from 0-60 or 0-100. Here are some of the candidates. Feel free to select any car year from the 90s.

1. Toyota Supra

2. Nissan 300 ZX Twin Turbo

3. Mitsubishi 3000 GT Twin Turbo

4. 97 Chevy Camaro SS

5. 87 Grand National

I thought it would make for some interesting talk here as well. Thanks to everyone.

Are we talking about stock?

I seem some crazy grand nationals..but I also seen a lot 500hp supras. Even with the 800hp Supras, I have never seen one lift off the ground like a Grand National has.

The doors are wide open for you buddy. Feel free to discuss both if you and/or any interesting stories such as the Grand National lifting off the ground. Thanks again.

I have a friend that works at a performance shop for imports, its called XS Engineering, they always have high HP import sports cars in there, if any of you seen The Fast and the Furious, they have the yellow Skyline with the silver logo at the shop.

But as far as potential....

Supras with their small displacement motors, I have seen up to 800 hp, and a few 1000hp Supras. But the fastest Supras are still in the 7's or 8s in the 1/4 mile.

The larger displacement domestics have always been fastest at the track here in Pomona. Grand Nationals, Typhoons, Cyclones, Novas, and Mustangs dominate the domestic feild( There was even a 9 second Pinto!). That Grand National that lifted off the ground went on to run 8 second quarter mile, and this was suppose to be the ''Street Legal Drags'' Basiclly, like they say, ''There is no replacement for displacement''

If I had a choice..I would pick the Supra, those are such chic magnets!

I can only speak for the Supra because I previously owned a Supra. It was a 93 Twin Turbo 6speed. I did a lot of research on the Supra and what really convinced me that it was the twin turbo sports car to buy was a head to head test between the other Japanese twin turbo cars during that time. I believe it was Motor Trend who compared the Supra, 300ZX, RX7, and the 3000GT (I'm not sure on the 3000GT). The Supra won the head to head contest in almost, if not, every category.

Out of your list there, I would say, only the Supra and Grand National have the real potential for speed. I go to the track quite often, and have never seen a 300zx, 3000GT, or Camero SS run in the levels of the older domestics and Supras.

Yeah, Don, you have to be more specific. There is no doubt that the Grand Nationals are the fastest *modified* cars (out of the pack, that is) with the Supra and Camaro SS not too far behind.

Turbocharged cars are VERY easy to make MUCH faster, compared to normally aspirated cars which generally do not have as good of a hp to dollar ratio.

Also, are we talking about OVERALL performance or just straight line stuff? True sports cars (IMO) do not just go fast in a straight line, they also go fast in the corners.

If that is the criteria, in my mind, there is NO DOUBT that the 13B RX7 wins. Great car, but not that reliable. Supra is decent at handling but is pretty much a pig with its high curb weight. 300zx has the same pitfall. The other cars just arent that great handling altogether, at least not without a VERY skilled driver.

Handling smandling. I thought I was pretty specific. Strictly 0-60 or 0-100 performance. I was just interested in cars that were for dragstripping. Thanks again guys.

Really, in my mind, this is only between the SS, GN and Supra.

3000gt is just too heavy, but that AWD can pull off some pretty good 60' times, if not 0-60.. I would say the 300zx is the slowest of the bunch.

The Supra is the easiest, and cheapest to get the low 1/4 times. Almost as simple as just turning up the boost..

The GN isn't far behind, because the stock internals can also stand up to quite a bit of boost. But the fuel system is a little less likey to take it in stride.

The SS doesn't have the fortune of being boosted. But it's a strong competitor in N/A mode..And you can always add FI into the equation.

(In regard to the Motor Trend article about the japanese TT cars, Yes, I read that one as well. But those were the BEST time's I think I've ever seen for the Supra. and possibly the WORST times I've ever seen for the RX-7. But alas, it always seems to be brought up when talking about the "fab 4", and the RX-7 gets shafted. :) I'm bitter, can you tell? :) )

For more details on the performance and mods for the MKIV Supra, visit the definitive Supra site: http://www.mkiv.com It'll contain all the information you'll need for the Supra. For HP, the Supra can be modded easily. Going single (ie. switching from twin turbo to a big single turbo) will get you over 500hp easily. I've got buddies here in SoCali with 700HP daily drivers...go figure. Going single will give you biiiig HP numbers at the dyno.

As for ranking which ones I'd fear at the track:

1. Supra & GN
2. Chevy SS
3. Mitsu and Nissan Z

Another truck/SUV to worry about: the GMC Cyclone/Typhoon!! That thing is a monster!!!

Supra is the king of the HP wars, because it can generate some RELIABLE HP, up to 1000 HP pretty reliably. Bullet-proof engine.

Grand National would be next, nice car.

My deepest apologies Martini. How could I have forgotten the RX-7 from the fab 4 list. Shame on me. Is that better?

Thanks for listing the site Huy. Interesting info.

Why limit it too new cars??? I mean heck if money is no object it is simple to bolt on a blower and NOS to any engine and still be street legal. Then you can get some major Hp.

Hell I remember riding in a 67 (or 68 I forget which year) Hurst Olds with a 455. What a ride! That car flew. Too bad he had origianl tires which would squeel like a pig.

I do think those Crotch rockets would win here but they were not included.

Of those listed I have seen some pretty fast GN. Heck that block is capable of more than 1000hp and was used at indy and other race venues.

But I would bet money someone out there has some old 60's muscle car all tricked out ready to kick A$$. I saw one on TV the other day it had twin blowers fuel injection and NOS. I think it was a Buick GS or something. Very cool.

Don is there beer riding on this with your buddies???

If we are taking strict straight line performance (which we obviously are), the modded GNX will generally blow the modded Supra out of the water. The Supra is the ultimate modded Japanese car, but the GNX is still a stronger performer (look at the amount of GNX's (many street driven!) that run the 1/4 in under 9 seconds and compare to the amount of Supras that do the same.

for the least amount of money. The GT VR4 is quick out of the hole but looses steam quickly. The SS will have trouble hooking up, but has great top end over 80 MPH. STOCK, it think it depends on the driver, but I think the Supra and the SS will be close.............and in the lead on a race to 100 mph.

Guess,

I see you watch TNN on Saturday mornings to. That Buick was nice.

The Supras are amazing cars. I have been in a few that were only slightly modified about 450 to 500 HP and they were fast.

Not that I have any information but what about VIPER, CORVETTE, Porsche, Ferrari, etc etc etc.

Those are pretty quick if I remember correctly.

All those cars are still in production. Supra - gone, Rx7 - gone, 3000GT4 - gone,GN -gone, Firebird/Camaro - going.....:(

It is amazing how glory is heaped on the dead. ;)
