Eating through clearcoat

Hello everyone,

I have been lurking in these forums for a few days. You guys are really knowledgable so I figure this is a good place to ask this question and get a semi-definitive answer. I have searched this and also the audiworld furom. As well as reading many of the articles over at cma, the furoms at autosupermart, and car care online.

My question: Should I be concerned about eating through the clearcoat polishing a brand new car with meg's #9 SMR 2.0 and following with Meg's #7 SCG. I do this 2 - 4 times a year. I apply with a PC 7424. I called Meg's and they told me a could use these products everyday and everything would be fine. Terry at CMA said the same. But for just as many posts that I read saying that these products are not abrasive enough to cause concern, I read just as many warning of the dangers of over polishing/cleaning your cars clearcoat. Could you guys post your opinions?

Thanks ~ A very confused BIGkev

You'd have to work pretty hard to go through the clear coat with those products. Especially if you are only going to use them a few times a year. If you were trying to use them every weekend then I would worry about your clear coat after a year, but you should be fine the way you've got it planned. #9 is pretty easy to use and isn't incredibly abrasive.

You just got some very good advice from two of the more experienced detailers. I assume you are using a foam polishing pad. I would not use the wool pad 4 times a year.

Thanks Guys!! I really appreciate the advice and no I would never use wool (I hear Wool is a last resort and only to be used by exp'ed detailers. I could be wrong so if anyone has any idea please post). I am using the foam polishing pad..... I have used CMA yellow cutting pads in the past but not on this car (it's only 2 months old, I'm thinking I'll use a cutting pad after winter).
