Does a UDM work on stainless steel?

My dad just bought a UDM for me and since I'll only use it on the weekends (college) he wanted to know if it would work on swirled and scratched stainless steel in a restaurant. What kind of pads and polish would he need also?

My builder's guy used a PC to polish out marring on a stainless steel vanity top (garge bathroom) that got damaged by some subcontractors, so the UDM oughta be able to do it too.

I dunno for sure what he used, but it was a series of abrasive discs, pads, and compounds made specifically for polishing metal. FWIW, I should point out that he spent basically an *entire work day* doing the job, this wasn't something that was over and done with an a few hours.

IMO you'd be better off (wet) sanding (which you can do with the UDM with the proper backing plate). Not sure if there are any regs or guidelines you need to follow when doing that in a food prep area.

To paraphrase the other two responses, it's going to require a lot more "abrasion" to remove scratches in a ferrous metal than on paint or aluminum, but the final buffing (if you want a high gloss surface) may be a similar process to paint polishing.

I think it depends on the type of stainless. If it is a high polished stainless vs a brushed stainless. Some stainless products have a grain type of pattern. If that's the case I wouldn't use a machine. If it is a grainless type of finish then good stainless polishes should work.
