Computer went boom...

About three weeks ago, my hard drive in the main computer suffered a huge malfunction. It was only five months old, so I never really backed up the thing. Yes, I placed way too much faith in my hardware. I did back some stuff at the beginning of February, so it's not a total loss.

I ended up buildig a new Juggernaught of a machine. I am 90% up and running. All I need to do is find my stinkin' Office CD to get that re-installed. All email tasks are being handled on the laptop.

Lessons:

Always back-up your stuff.
Computers are evil.
Microsoft is evil.

For those that are into this stuff:

Athlon64 3700+ 939
DFI NF4 Ultra-D Motherboard
2 GB G.Skill DDR500
2 x 300 GB Seagate SATA Drives in RAID1
X850XT Graphics Card
Lite-On DVD Burner with Light-Scribe
Antec P180 Case

Sounds like an excellent machine.

Three words for you...

External Hard Drive

You can get a couple hundred gig for relatively cheap. Just plug it in via USB and it is a perfect place to save your stuff. Then if your machine goes kerblewie then you always have the stuff that matters. Software will need to be reinstalled, but everything you don't have a disc for can be safe and sound on the external. Plus it is easier than remembering to back stuff up every day.

I'm sure you are glad to be back up and running. Welcome back! :bigups

Actually, I have weekly scheduled back-ups of most important files to the DVD drive. Additionally, I will have nightly back-ups of crucial files to an offsite server. Combined with the RAID1 setup (as soon ass my replacement drive arrives), I should be all set. Hindsight is 20/20.
