Color Sanding

Hello Everyone.

I do some color sanding now and then and was wondering if any of you guys ever do it with a rotary?

I don't mind admitting that color sanding scares the hell out of me at times, even using the right grit with a block, but I can't imagine doing it with a rotary machine.

I'm getting ready to color sand a dark blue Kenworth 10 Wheeler and am looking for a confidence builder. lol I'd like to take a shot at using a machine on it.

Hey Eddie

I color sand a fair amount, mostly by hand, but I have seen it done by my brother in law who is a body man.

He used a sander called a jitter bug with 2000 grit paper...he mostly does this to get rid of orange peel and nibs in the clear.

His advice is tape of your edges really well and use even pressure and smooth strokes...and finally use common sense on the curves
:D

Next week i am getting a couple of old doors from a body shop to practice this style of color sanding...see what happens

hey sean you double posted...lol

yes exactly like Sean said....I've done quite a bit , but all by hand...have seen the same type of sander as the jitterbug, but really didn't think i wanted to do that much of that type of work to really learn the skill and buy the machine...
Hand is always safer...more control ..especially without a lot of practice or insurance;)

Poorboy & Sean THANK YOU.

I ended up doing it by hand (with a Megs block & paper) and it came out fantastic.

I don't know what it is about color sanding but I get a little bit nervous every single time I do it. Might have something to do with the time I destroyed the hood on a Buick Regal lol. Not funny!!
