Cause and prevention of rotary induced 1/2 circle scratches

My L5-S1 is killing me!
Many times using the rotary I get 1/2 circle scratches induced in a random fashion. Some areas are clear, some have 2-10 1/2 circles in a smallish area. This usually only happens doing compounding work. My usual products are BF SCR compound or HTEC/OP with either a ccs white pad or pfw at 1500rpm. These 1/2 circles are then hard to remove, even with say IP and a white pad at 1200rpm. What is the cause of these?

I sometimes get this with compounds like Megs 95 or Presta Ultra; but very rarely. I think some compounds have some slightly larger abrasives (larger than average) that cause these. I find they normally come out as the compound breaks down though. If you're seeing them after breaking the compound down fully you may have something caught in your pad?

I got that with my PC when using "rocks in a bottle" SSR3 with a 4" pad. Sounds like your heavy compounds doing that, as Picus described.

Seems like it happens too much to be something randomly caught in the pad.

Probably the larger abrasive thing then. I had this happen today with M95 (happens a lot to me with M95), but usually it removes them itself as it breaks down. Sometimes it doesn't. Maybe try breaking down the compounds you're using more? Just a shot in the dark.

It sounds like the large particles in your polish are gouging the paint. When using a heavy cutting "rocks in a bottle" polish you should probably stick to a wool pad. These don't hold the polish onto the paint like foam, where you risk the larger particles gouging. Or switch to M105 as it has no large particles which can gouge. Cutting is best done with wool, it's not an outdated material. Foam is best for finishing.

I learned something today. I thought 95 and 105 were identical except for the work time (and some people have said 105 leaves a better finish).

I guess I could try breaking them down more and using wool more. I have used pfw in the past and I -think- I still had some of this gouging but not as bad. I need to try M105 too.
