Can't Sleep!

I took my truck through a car wash in Traverse City Michigan and now I can't sleep. We had the kids at Great Wolf Lodge and I went outside to find about 30 sea gulls sitting on my truck.

In a panic I jumped in and drove to the nearest car wash and proceeded to have the 'crap' removed. Once the jet driers were finished I got out and could not believe my eyes, every panel on the truck is scratched and there are scuff marks from the back and forth action of the large fabric panels used in the car wash.

I own a black 06 lariat crew, which up to this point was beautiful. I am at my wits end about making such a stupid mistake and ruining something I've worked so hard to keep really nice. I spent the next day and a half of our vacation online researching what I might have to do to fix the damage. I am a perfectionist, but I am not a professional detailer.

From everything I've read, this isn't something you just try on a whim and bang you're good at it. I live in a city that from my knowledge has nowhere near the talent presented within this forum when it comes to this art. I don't know what to do next and everyday that passes increases the anxiety over such a stupid reaction to something that in hindsight would have been easily fixed had I taken the time to breathe.

I'd post pics but I need more than 10 posts before that is allowed. What I am looking for is perhaps contact information to someone that is very reputable and within reasonable driving distance that might consider doing what needs to be done short of having the entire truck repainted.

I would just search the pro details before and after. Find one that has detailed your year truck. Use the products they used and you should be good to go. Or hopefully someone has detailed your year truck and they will have some insight. I just did my 09 Black Pontiac G8 for the first time and it came out great. Just realize that you will be spending at least 8 hours.

You would be better off getting the tools needed for the job for right around the same price you will be paying someone else to do it for you. This way you will have the tools for another time. Also with the tools out now almost anyone who has the time can get good results!

Good luck. From what I can tell a P.C. 7424xp and pads with 105/205 megs twins should be good for you!

Dont lose sleep my good friend....you need a reputable paint rejuvenation expert. I dont know where you are but I am sure you can find one. . You see its all about the PERFECTION OF THE CORRECTION. It involes being an artist with a high speed polisher who knows what the h--- he is doing, you would agree. There is surely someone here on this forum who is capable. Paintxpert

Thanks for all the confidence boosting posts, but to understand my condition, from what I've read with respect to edging and proper control, if I were to make it worse, it would put me in a place of discomfort beyond belief. I really do want to try this, but not on this truck and not on my first go. I'm in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada for anyone that might be interested in having a look.

You would actually have to TRY to mess up the paint if your using a orbital dual action polisher. They are virtually fool proof. Just so you know if you get a dual action and pads and polish it is going to take some time to do a truck that size. Plan on an entire weekend.

I suggest finding a detailer on craigslist. There has to be some. I advertise on it all the time. I think you should let someone with experience handle it.

If I was closer I would do it.

You're actually closer than I thought. 5.5 hours, but I'm without any free time to drive anywhere for at least 4 weeks. I can't wait that long.....:)

I agree, it would be really hard to mess anything up. Now if it was a rotary that we are talking about then yes it would be easy to mess things up. A monkey could use a DA and get a nice finish :waxing:

Well, I wouldn't go that far; note how many "how do I fix/improve/etc. what I'm trying to do?!?" threads are on here ;)

I agree 100% :xyxthumbs Especially about the "don't lose sleep" part. Sorry it messed with your vacation, but hey, [stuff] happens and when you're vacationing, IMO the vehicle is merely the transportation that moves you around (says the guy who deered his irreplaceable S8 at the start of a weekend vacation, which he did *not* let the wreck spoil).

If you really, truly can't wait, find some way of getting the vehicle to a reputable detailer, or even pay to get the detailer to come to you. Wouldn't be the first time that paying the detailers transportation/lodging fees added up to more than the detail itself.

Or get the polisher and do it yourself. Yeah, you almost certainly *can* do it. There are plenty of people here who can help coach you.

But I'd try to get a pro to do it if you can possibly afford what that might entail (the distance/etc. factors in this case).
