Best way to clean clearcoat off aluminum wheels?

Wondering, I have a set of wheels I need to take the clearcoat off... what is the best route?



I don't really want to sand them if I don't have to, the finish is FINE underneath, just needs to be bare and polished



Thanks for any help! I wanna spend the least time possible on these...

What type of paint stripper is OK for aluminum?



Anyone have any experiences with this situation?

Carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner. Spray it on and let it soak. When you wipe it with a rag, the CC comes right off.
 
I've never had carb or brake cleaner take clear off like stripper does. I just used carb cleaner on my bike and got some on the paint and it did not remove anything.
 
I used it to remove the clear on my 83 RM125 swing arm and suspension levers. It came right off. BUT now I am thinking that clear is different then automotive wheels.

I have heard oven cleaner removes clear on car wheels.
 
Good luck with that Stumpy, IMO that finish isn't "fine", it's corroded around the valve stem, and it's going to look just as bad after you get what little clear is left in that area off.

there is a machined finish on the Aluminum

so ALL of it will need to be sanded & polished:sadwavey:
 
Ok, buying some aircraft stripper today, unfortunatly they can only get it in quart form, so I will be applying with a brush...



How long do I let it sit? Til it bubbles?



Scrape it off with a plastic stick? then what? do I need to have bucket of soapy water handy to wash residue off so it doesn't etch the aluminum wheels?



They aren't mine, the guy isn't paying me much, so he isn't expecting miracles, just clean looking wheels!

I Have Those Same Rims! They Are Almost In The Same Condition Maybe A Little Better. Did You Get Them To Shine And If So How?
