Anyone in the lawn-care business?

Just wonderin if any detailers do landscaping on the side?

Thinkin about it... just like detailing, with the right tools you can make just as much $$$ theoretically...

Opinions?

I used to do landscaping when I was a kid. It's tough work. Summers are hot and filled with bugs and the winters are brutal. If there are plants involved, it can be a real pain. Use the wrong product on a plant, bush, rose, etc. and you can kill it quickly. Use fertilizer at the wrong time or too much and you can kill the grass. Run over a sprinkle head, especially now with everything being made of plastic, and guess what? You're fixing it out of your own pocket.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but rather just give you an idea of what to expect.

If you can find homes that just have simple lawns, then it would be worth it because you could easily do several a day.

Detailing & Landscaping is actually pretty parallel in the things that we deal with. First off, competition. Lots of newbies that pop up in detailing that charge nothing and know nothing. Same in landscaping. Newbies pop up with cheap equipment and a pickup and call themselves landscapers. They charge nothing and come an go, but do damage in the process. Second, like rustybumper said, newbies don't know what to use for products and tools and don't know how to use them. Damage is caused and more bad press for the pros. As a former manager of landscape companies, it is hard work and many times employee dependent.

I suggest to look on the lawnsite.com forum - tons of info! I use to read that forum when I was thinking about doing lawns, but - like others have said, it's a tough job and gettin tougher all the time due to .......wait for it............your imperial federal guv-ment! Surprise?
