6.5" vs. 8" Pads (Rotary)

Im about to make the leap from DA to Rotary, though I plan to keep the PC close-by on all jobs. Having said that, and seeing as how I have an extensive 6.5" pad collection from using my PC, is there any reason I should avoid using the 6.5" pads on the rotary?

I dont mind buying the 6" backing plate and all-new 8-8.5" pads if thats the best or safest way to use the rotary, but if I dont need to spend the money, I wont.

If anyone can help me with this, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Richard

Get the 6" backing plate because the 6.5" pads are much easier to use. I have a 4 3/4" BP so I can use the 6"-7" pads that I have from my PC. I also have a 7" BP to use with 7.5" pads, but the 6.5" pads are the way to go. The bigger the pad the higher rpm at the edge, so a smaller pas is safer as well.

I had the same issue - about 20 6.5" LC pads - I got the 4.75" backing plate and the Makita from Autogeek, you'll want the plastic cleaner brush too, works great. I am thinking of going with Edge 2K for the ease of centering when these LC pads wear out.

Thanks guys. I kind of figured the 8.5" pads would be the safest, as the smaller the pad, the more it directs the energy into a smaller area. I actually hadnt even thought about the larger pads having the greatest rpms at the edges...:idea

Regardless, I decided to go with the 3.75" rotary backing plate and to keep my 6" DA pads for use with the rotary (in fact, I ordered more just for the sake of it...:chuckle: ) I should have my Makita from Coastal Tool on Monday, along with most of my other new supplies from TOL and Autogeek.

Do you guys think I should get a set of 4" pads for my DA and a matching backing plate? This would sort of fill the void between the DA and the Rotary...??:nixweiss

Good choice, but I think you mean a 4.75" BP;) . Why not get the 4" pads and BP for the rotary? If I didn't already have them for my PC I would get them for the rotary.

Because the rotary is going to be aggresive enough for just about anything, even with the 6-6.5" pads. However, the PC can be made more aggressive by stepping down to the 4" pads.

Essentially, Im asking if it would be beneficial to have something in between the rotary and the PC with 6" pads (ie. the PC with 4" pads)? Or am I probably going to switch to exclusively using the rotary once I become proficient with it, rendering the 4" pads on the PC useless?

Yeah, I would rather have 4" pads on a rotary than PC. Once you get the hang of the rotary I think you will probably continue with it.
