27ft Boat Restoration

Hi guys,

It's getting warmer out and my dad and I set out to do restoration on our boat. I have not started yet, but before I do I just want to put it out there for any advice/tips/help I can get from you guys.

The entire gelcoat (?) is not only oxidized but 'gone' after years of abuse, so we were thinking of repainting it. First though, I should wetsand (what grit?) to a matte finish, and repaint the entire exterior? I will look into some gelcoat restoration kits as it is currently pretty cracked and broken up (if that makes sense). So I just wanted to clarify with you guys the process of prepping for paint - am I on the right track?

After we spray new paint and clear, will there be a need to machine polish? I have a Griots DA, but I'm not sure if that will suffice (no rotary either).

Any ideas?

I would recommend to dewax/degrease the whole boat with HD solvent

Sand the whole boat with 150 or 180g paper

Spray with high build epoxy primer

Block sand whole boat 220 to 320g

Fill any pin holes and inperfections

Spray 3 coats Marine Polyurethane

Gelcoat repair kit won't help...............................or

Sand whole boat

spray duratec primer

sand whole boat with 220g

spray gelcoat

sand whole boat 220 /400 /800 / 1200g

compound and polish whole boat

Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it.

I did my 21 ft Crownline last year with M205 and a G110.

After two bottles of M205, some marine polish, Chemical Guys JetSeal 109, meguiars marine wax and a ton of labor, it came out really nice, but I wouldn't start anything you aren't fully prepared to finish.
