2002 Audi AllRoad Mold Remova/Restoration...Signature Detailed

Greg Gellas

I'm Greg :)
First I want to thank DJ Mayo, David Fermani, and Barry Theal for their ideas and thoughts on this detail.

I got an email from the owner and said his Audi had some mold. I have done some light mold work before and wasn't too worried about it :cool1: I decided to go check out the car to put together a more exact estimate. This Audi had a leak coming from the firewall, causing the drivers side floor to be soaked. It was put away in a garage for about 4 months or so for the winter.

So what does 4 months of wet car interior look like...:sick1:

After some discussion, and research, I decided to use an Enzyme Mold Cleaner called sporicidin. I knew this would be a two day project. I suited up, using a mask, gloves, long sleeve shirt tucked into the glove, and some old pants. I was going to throw away everything I was wearing so I looked like pretty silly :)

I diluted it in a bucket, and in a spray bottle. Not wanting the mold to get airborne I sprayed everything down with the sporicidin mixture and let it sit for a few minutes. Even after just spraying I saw a huge improvement. I was concerned about pitting on the leather but fortunately the mold wasn't on there long enough to pit the leather. I then continued to go over the entire interior with towels from the buckets rinsing after about every square foot or so, I wanted to remove it not spread it around.

Even though I was using the sporicidin I decided to break out the steamer to assist in the mold killing. I have a Polti 2085 steamer that is absolutely amazing at producing steam, I don't know what I would have done without it. I steamed the carpets and lightly hit the seams of the leather. The air ducts were steamed also.

After Day 1 I went back to finish up. After setting up a mini dehumidifier all night I got about a quart of water. I included the cost of this in the detail and left it with the owner to ensure that the entire car got dry. He will be using it daily until no more water appears.

All of the leather was then cleaned and conditioned using Lexol. I decided to use the Lexol instead of Leathurique due to time. Any plastic was dressed using Optimum Protectant Plus.

Thanks for looking as always Greg :D

I was going to say nice cloth interior. bahaha. Nice turn around, hopefully there is nothing lingering still!

Oh. My. Goodness.

That is one awesome turn around! Just please tell us you were wearing a mask or respirator while working in that mess. :fear:

Without a doubt....No job is worth my health :D

Man, that is a serious rolling health hazard. I really wonder if that car will ever safe again. Great clean up effort. I hope you were paid well.

wow what a shame that happend to that car. but that is the most impressive turn around i have seen. great work, and i would of bought a bio suit for that .

great work! however one couldn't help but wonder if at least one single spore didn't get left behind? how does one make sure they get every last bit? under the visors? under the seats? inside the foam padding of each seat? on the wiring harness beneath the dash? Does the sporicidin keep working after you've wiped it off? Or will everything just die eventually provided you keep the interior dry?

KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!!!!!!!! OMG that was so nasty. I really commend you on a valiant effort and turn around. I'm still scratching myself b/c i feel grossed out looking at those befores. sorry, i know I sound like a little girl, but EWWWWW!

I have to agree...I almost vomited while looking at those pics. I don't think I would have been brave enough to tackle that job. Very nice! Did you do anything inside the air vents to make sure no mold was growing in them, and will come out when the a/c or heat is put on?

I did steam the vents. I would steam one side until it came out of the other side and so on. I did what I could to get back there. The owner didn't want me to remove any of the interior.

I felt sick just looking at the pictures. Wow. Nice turn around. Where did you get the enzyme cleaner?

That was absolutely one of the most disgusting things I have seen in a car interior.... nice turnaround.. of course, all is for naught if the owner of the Audi doesn't get the leak repaired.

Oh god...gage me with a spoon. This car is disgusting and by far the worst interiors to ever grace the pages of Autopia. Epic interior reconditioning thread right here! Your pics show the real story. The video he gave you made the mold infestation look way better. This isn't just a "I don't know how my car got moldy" situation. This has got to be from a major flood/water ingestion, not someone leaving 1 too many rotten tuna sandwiches in their car for a week. Did you ever fingure out the cause & origin? How did it smell? I couldn't of done a better job myself! Glad to know it all worked out!

I hope you explained to them that there is probably a large amount of mold that is still lurking inside the car as a result of not entirely gutting the interior and cleaning top to bottom.

Not a car I'd ride in, even after that amazing transformation you did!
