alternative to a PC?

I'd just like to ask... would a deWalt random orbit sander (with a polishing pad, of course) be a good substitute for a PC random orbit polisher. Anyone tried this? the deWalt is a variable speed model (4000 to 6800 opm)



i've tried searching the threads but just could not find a related thread
 
Great question, getafix. I've wondered the same thing.



I currently have a WEN 6010 , which is a generic one I picked up at Walmart for around $30.



So what makes the PC so much better than this generic one or even the DeWalt that getafix mentioned?
 
I have to agree with BlackRegal. A WEN unit is just for applying wax/polish or buffing off wax/polish but does not have the versatility to give advantage a PC or Dewalt (Rotary) will. I don't believe the WEN has a adjustable speed control. You will not be able to remove swirlmarks, water spots, medium-heavy oxidation, and with the PC the ease of changing your pads on the fly with the help of a velcro back system.

that's exactly the model that I'm currently looking at... could the lowest setting (4300 opm) burn the paint?

I have the DeWalt DW443 and the lowest setting not being as slow as the PC is not even an issue. I hardly ever even run my DeWalt on the lowest setting even when I'm applying wax or polish.
