Repainted hood, wetsanding and finish up

So, I painted my hood, which resulted in MAJOR orange peel. Starting things off, wetsanded with 1000, 1500, then 2000 (even 1000 was taking FOREVER), but didnt' get everything completely level, partially because of time, and partially because I didn't wanna sand too thin.

I only polished a couple small pieces of the hood so far, but the process has been Hi Temp Extreme Cut via an orange LC CCS pad by rotary x3-4 and that has still left a bunch of sanding marks as you'll see in the pics....Another day I guess.

Looks decent from far away doesn't it

Not so much when you get closer

Sanded with 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit

Started compounding with HTXC via rotary x3-4. First experience with the LC CCS pads since I ordered them, and they seem to work pretty nicely.

Now you can see the sanding marks still left...blurry blurry blurry

Re: Repainted hood, wetsanding and finish up

Some wool pads would help with those sanding marks.

Re: Repainted hood, wetsanding and finish up

I'd say 2 passes, wool usually works pretty fast IME.

Wool is very nice after wetsanding. Which wool pads do you have?

Re: Repainted hood, wetsanding and finish up

I don't know how much paint you actually put on but it is gonna be tought to get all that out without cutting through. I'd recommend on buying a quart of clear and putting 2 layers on, letting that dry, sanding with 1000 smooth and then putting 2 more layers on. After that you can wetsand and buff and it should be slick as glass. Single stage is much harder to spray and get to look right than bc/cc. On single stage you need to put wet on wet. It is tough because you usually get a run but that is the only way for it to flow correctly. Runs are easy to get out as long as it is a solid color in single stage or in a clearcoat. There isn't any single step that makes a paintjob stand out but the gun you use, how it is setup, and spray technique make a paintjob.

I have the same in black, green and blue.

How do you like the yellow, does it fill the gap between the black and green well?

Metal, What about you, do you have any wool on hand?

Re: Repainted hood, wetsanding and finish up

try using HTHC on it, it might level it out a bit more.

Re: Repainted hood, wetsanding and finish up

Metal:

That hood looks just like my race car. Single stage red, after it got hit I had a body shop straighten it somewhat, then I did the bondo and paint myself. That was five years ago, and I finally wetsanded and polished last year. I used a rotary, yellow LC pads, and Menz PG. Actually I tried a PC first with no results to speak of, so I ordered the rotary from Harbor Freight thinking I was never going to use it again. Now I prefer it to the PC.

Good luck.
