Luckily - the factories are not doing this yet..

It's not just the Hot Rod shops any more ..these are examples of a new PPG clearcoat anyone can buy. The instructions are: NO sanding!

I don't like it, there is being different to start new trends, go places where people have not gone, and then there is being different just to get noticed.

Now a days there really isnt a place no one has gone. I have been involved with car shows and mini truck shows for a long time now and in just the last 4-6 years people have gotten more crazy with their vehicles and now its to the point where you cant do much of anything that no one has seen. With this they are just trying to go with what people are into. Rat rods have hit the show circuit HARD and everyone from imports to mini trucks are going with the flat or semi flat color. I would buy a car like this. I like it a lot. Granted I would have to have a car with paint so I could work on the finish and keep making it shine, but I wouldnt mind having a car with that black or red or even blue. Anyway my 2 cents.

Primered, flat, suede, or whatever you want to call it has been around on hot/street rods and customs for years. I personally think it looks pretty good on that custom, but I'm not feelin' the love on that Saturn(?). There are also some pretty high dollar Rat Rods hitting the shows these days, and some of them are quite unique:

Hey! My Saturn looked like this. I was ahead of my time!

P.S. That Saturn looks like a heavily modded Aura "Coupe?" I don't know if there are any factory version coupes out yet.

Re: Luckily - the factories are not doing this yet..

that primer look has been around since like the 40's. Some rat rods look kind of cool with it, but generally I think it looks crappy. Give me a nice glossy paint finish.

Ha.. that's FAR from new! Matte paint, or the effect using just primer, has been around for over 60 years on hot rods and customs.

The newer paints give the same classic look but last longer and, by the way, still require some maintenance and protection.
